Far West on Wheels

What is Far West on Wheels?

Far West on Wheels is Far West USY’s 18 day summer bus trip. Each year, we choose a different route around the western part of the United States or Canada. Far West on Wheels is a great way to travel to new places, strengthen your Jewish Identity, and make lifelong friends and memories. We find fun and amazing places to visit in each city we go to. Along with sightseeing, we also experience Shabbat together, do informal Jewish education sessions, and volunteer as a group in social action projects.

Where does Wheels stay?

On Far West on Wheels, we stay at hotels in the various cities we live in. The participants are roomed 4-6 people in a room depending on the maximum capacity. If the opportunity arises, we will do a camping experience or rent a house or cabin.

How observant is Far West on Wheels?

One of the truly wonderful aspects about Far West on Wheels is learning how to live as a Conservative Jew in our modern world, therefore as Conservative Jews we keep kosher and participate in tefilot (prayer experiences) daily.

We only eat kosher meat from kosher butchers, kosher restaurants, and synagogues. If we eat at non-kosher restaurants, we eat vegetarian (including dairy).

We realize that not all participants on Wheels come from similar observant backgrounds. We meet all of our participants at their observance level to make Far West on Wheels an inviting and learning religious experience. We observe Shabbat and make it a point to make services different and creative from day to day. When the opportunity arises, we will take advantage of some of the breath-taking locations we visit to have a prayer service that can be inspirational and spiritual.

What are the dates and cost for Far West on Wheels Summer of 2013?

Far West on Wheels for the summer of 2013 will be Thursday July 18th-August 4th. Cost is $3150

Where does Far West on Wheels leave from and return to? What if I am from out of the Los Angeles Area?

Far West on Wheels leaves from and returns to the same location in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, CA. If you are from out of state, we ask that a flight be made for the day before to avoid missing the bus departure. Participants that fly the night before, or participants from the Orange County and San Diego area that would like to avoid driving early in the morning, will be given home hospitality by one of the attending Los Angeles area Wheels participants (This is a great way to meet someone before the trip starts).
